Altgeld, John Peter
(30 dic. 1847, Niederselters, Prusia–12 mar. 1902, Joliet, Ill., EE.UU.).

Político estadounidense, nacido en Alemania, gobernador de Illinois (1893–97). Emigró de Alemania cuando niño. En la década de 1870 se trasladó a Chicago, donde acumuló una pequeña fortuna en bienes raíces y participó activamente en política por el Partido Demócrata. En 1892 obtuvo el cargo de gobernador como candidato reformista. En 1893, a instancias de Clarence Darrow y de dirigentes obreros, perdonó a tres hombres condenados por complicidad en la revuelta de Haymarket. El polémico indulto provocó el clamor de los conservadores e influyó en su derrota, en 1896, cuando postuló a la reelección. Más adelante, sin embargo, su decisión suscitó una amplia aprobación en círculos judiciales.
